This special day is celebrated every year on 26th September to spread sexual awareness among the younger generation. In such a situation, today on this special occasion, apart from condoms, we tell you about some such contraceptive methods, which are very famous among the people.

Emergency Contraceptive Pills

These emergency contraceptive pills can be used after having unprotected sex, if a condom breaks during sex, or if a woman has been sexually assaulted.

If this pill is taken within the first three days of having sex, there is an 85 percent chance of preventing pregnancy. This is the reason why it is sometimes called the 'morning after' pill. The sooner these pills are taken, the more effective they are.

Disadvantages

The most common side effects of birth control pills include nausea, vomiting. Apart from this, it can also affect your menstruation. Also, these birth control pills do not protect against STIs.

Condoms

Condoms are the only method of birth control that helps prevent pregnancy as well as protect against most STIs. This method of contraception is hormone free and can be easily carried with you. Condom is available for both male and female.

Advantage

This is the best protection against STIs. It is easily available and hormone free.

Disadvantages

If the condom is not used properly, it may tear or come off during sex. Due to which the chances of getting pregnant increase. Apart from this, some people are also allergic to latex condoms.

Birth control pill

This is a small pill taken once a day. According to reports, Australian women use the contraceptive pill the most.

Pros:

If used correctly, the contraceptive pill is a highly effective method. It also helps in reducing menstrual pain without inhibiting sex. Apart from this, it can also be helpful to a great extent in curing acne.

Disadvantages

If you forget to take the contraceptive pill on time, it will not be as effective. Only women can use it. The pill is not suitable for women who cannot take contraceptives containing oestrogen. It does not provide protection against STIs.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

The full form of IUD is Intrauterine Device. It is a contraceptive device. It is small, often T-shaped, that is inserted into a woman's uterus. These devices are inserted through the vagina into the uterus by doctors or experienced nurses.

This tiny device releases copper into your embryo, which makes it harder for sperm to fertilize an egg. This method gives you up to 99 percent protection from getting pregnant for 5-10 years.

Disadvantages

There may be some change in the pattern of your periods. Pain and heavy bleeding can occur in the first few months after getting it done. Some women may feel cramping in the lower abdomen and back pain. The risk of vaginal infection may also increase. Also it does not protect you from STIs.

Contraceptive implant

A contraceptive implant is a small, thin plastic rod that is fitted under the skin of a woman's arm. It contains progesterone hormone which slowly gets mixed in the blood.

It provides protection against pregnancy for up to 4 years and is more effective. The implant is about the size of a matchstick and its small size makes it possible to place it in the forearm.

Disadvantages

This method does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

Birth control injection

In this only injections of progestin are given. This injection is also helpful in treating endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory diseases. It works in the same way as birth control pills. Its effect lasts for eight to twelve weeks.

Disadvantages

This injection can cause irregular bleeding. It needs to keep track of the number of months used. It does not protect against STIs.

Vaginal Ring

This contraceptive ring is placed in the vagina for 21 days and removed every month for 7 days at the start of the menstrual cycle. This special ring provides protection against unwanted pregnancy for up to 13 cycles of your periods i.e. for a full year.

Advantage

You can insert and remove this vaginal ring yourself. Your fertility returns quickly once the ring is removed.

Disadvantages

It is not suitable for women who cannot take estrogen containing contraceptives. You just have to remember to change it at the right time. It does not protect against STIs.
